sweet spot M2 Ultra / 64–96GB — 13B at q8 and 30B at q4 run comfortably, offload never chokes
if you push 30B+ 128–192GB — room for long context + speculative decoding
avoid 24–32GB Max — fast at 7B, but you'll hit the ceiling the day a bigger model lands

For 7B/13B work a Max chip is plenty; for 30B-class models step up to the Ultra and don't skimp on unified memory — spec-sheet CPU cores matter less than bandwidth here.
