Mac Studio vs GPU PC for local AI โ an honest comparison
A GPU PC wins on performance per dollar and upgradability; a Mac Studio wins on noise, power draw, and software that just works. Choose the Mac Studio for quiet, low-effort ownership; choose the GPU PC for maximum tokens per dollar.
Perf per dollar, power draw, noise, and software ease, measured how ownership feels. When the Mac Studio wins, when the GPU PC wins, and when neither.
Short version: if the model fits in one graphics card's VRAM, the PC is faster per dollar. If it doesn't, the Mac Studio is the cheapest machine that runs it without a second mortgage in GPUs.
Already own a gaming or desktop PC? Don't buy either of these yet โ turn an old gaming PC into a local AI box first, then revisit this comparison only if you outgrow it.
[ the verdict up front ]
[ perf per dollar ]
A 16GB discrete card at roughly $900 street will decode a 13B q4 model noticeably faster than a Mac Studio at twice the system price โ for models that fit entirely in VRAM, bandwidth wins and the PC has more of it per dollar. The moment your model spills past the card, the math inverts: partial offload to DDR5 system RAM drops decode speed hard, and a second 16GB card still leaves you under a single 96GB Studio for 70B-class work. The honest rule: PC wins below ~16GB of model, Mac wins above ~32GB of model, and the 16โ32GB band is a coin flip decided by whether you enjoy building PCs.
[ power ]
A Mac Studio idles around 10W and pulls well under 200W at full inference load. A GPU PC with a modern high-end card idles at 60โ90W and pulls 500โ700W at the wall under sustained decode. Run inference four hours a day and the PC costs you roughly $8โ12 a month more in electricity โ not decisive, but real. If the box runs a 24/7 server role, the gap compounds; budget a quality 850W gold-rated PSU either way.
[ noise ]
This is the one nobody believes until they live with it. The Studio is functionally silent at full load โ you will check twice that it's working. A GPU PC under sustained inference holds its fans at a constant audible whoosh for the entire session. Fine in an office or closet, genuinely annoying on a desk next to your head. A dampened case and bigger, slower fans help; they don't close the gap.
[ software ease ]
Mac: install Ollama or LM Studio, download a model, done. Total time to first token is measured in minutes. PC (NVIDIA): install the driver, CUDA, then your runtime โ it works reliably in 2026, but it's an afternoon, and every major update is a small chance of a broken evening. AMD on Linux saves money and costs weekends. If your hourly rate matters, that difference is worth more than the spec-sheet gap.
